Indian Navy warship INS Kolkata on Saturday night efficiently “cornered and coerced” all of the 35 Somali pirates onboard the hijacked service provider vessel, MV Ruen, to give up and ensured the secure evacuation of the 17 crew members with none harm, the spokesperson for the navy stated on social media platform X.


INS Kolkata’s operations towards the pirates lasted for about 40 hours, in keeping with the official’s put up.


INS Kolkata had carried out the interception of the pirate ship, previously the MV Ruen, nearly 2,600 km from the Indian coast and compelled the ship to cease, with the assistance of INS Subhadra, at the least one unmanned aerial automobile, P-8I maritime patrol plane, and marine commandos air-dropped by C-17 plane.


The vessel has been sanitised for the presence of unlawful arms, ammunition, and contraband, added the navy spokesperson. 


The Navy had intercepted the pirate-controlled ex-MV Ruen vessel on March 15, Friday. It was hijacked by Somali pirates on December 14, 2023. There are at the least 15-plus crew on the vessel from Bulgaria, Angola, and Myanmar, Navy officers stated.


On being intercepted, the pirates opened hearth on the Indian warship, which is taking acceptable motion as per worldwide regulation to counter piracy. Operation by the commandos was on by the point of submitting of this report.


“The ex-MV Ruen, which had been hijacked by Somali pirates on December 14, was reported to have sailed out as a pirate ship in direction of conducting acts of piracy on the excessive seas,” the Navy stated.


“The pirates on-board the vessel have been known as upon to give up and launch the vessel and any civilians they could be holding towards their will,” the Navy had stated in a press release.


In the previous couple of weeks, the Indian Navy has prolonged help to numerous service provider vessels within the Western Indian Ocean following assaults on them.


The Indian Navy, earlier this month, foiled a piracy try on an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel having a crew of 11 Iranian and eight Pakistani nationals alongside the east coast of Somalia.


In January, Indian warship INS Sumitra rescued 19 Pakistani crew of an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel after it was attacked by pirates off the east coast of Somalia.


The Navy on January 5 thwarted an tried hijacking of the Liberian-flagged vessel MV Lila Norfolk within the North Arabian Sea and rescued all its crew members.


Liberian-flagged vessel MV Chem Pluto, with 21 Indian crew members, was the goal of a drone assault off India’s west coast on December 23.

The Navy has already enhanced the deployment of its frontline ships and surveillance plane for maritime safety operations in view of the maritime setting within the crucial sea lanes, together with within the North and Central Arabian Sea.
